Over the years, Kansas City has been a great source of confusion for many travelers—myself included. Would you believe that the first time I visited Missouri, I thought I was in Kansas for the first 24 hours of my stay?!

Kansas City, Missouri (KCMO) and Kansas City, Kansas are located on opposite sides of the Kansas River. Ironically, KCMO was incorporated in 1850—8 years before Kansas became a state and 22 years before they incorporated a Kansas City of their own.

When you hear people talking about Kansas City, they’re probably referring to the one in Missouri. KCMO is around four times the size of its name twin and boasts way more attractions. There’s speculation that the state leaders in Kansas named their city to steal back the name and divert visitors to their state, but it’s never been proven.
