I recently spent an incredible day volunteering to replant taro in Hawaii with Alaska Airlines’ Mālama ʻĀina program. This beautiful lo’i (taro field) is a testament to the land’s richness and the community’s dedication. Giving back to these islands in honor of my cousin (who’s more like my sister) felt deeply meaningful. Hawaii was always our go-to vacation spot, and this experience brought me closer to the culture and land we both loved so much. I wrote about this journey and my path through grief after losing her 4 years ago. Volunteering on vacation isn’t just about giving back; it’s about reconnecting with places and people in the most profound way.

These past few weeks have been a bit of a whirlwin

These past few weeks have been a bit of a whirlwind.

I’m currently between travel schedules and deadlines, and my energy is zapped.

While I enjoy what I do, I’ve been feeling the weight of burnout. It’s tough, but it’s real, and I believe in sharing the real moments with you all, not just the highlights.

In times like these, I give myself permission to walk away and play. For me playing means being creative. Whether using my camera or Cricut, playing recharges me in so many ways.

Here are just a few benefits of embracing playfulness:

1️⃣ Fosters Innovation: Playing and being creative opens the doors to thinking outside the box. In these moments, our minds are free to explore, invent, and discover new solutions to old problems.

2️⃣ Improves Emotional Health: Engaging in creative activities helps manage stress, combat anxiety, and even lift the spirits when we’re down.

3️⃣ Enhances Problem-Solving Skills: Creativity and play are not bound by rules, which encourages flexible thinking and problem-solving.

4️⃣ Boosts Brain Function: Creative play stimulates the brain to make new connections and pathways. This boost in brain function can enhance our ability to think quickly and efficiently.

5️⃣ Encourages Self-Expression: Creative play allows us to find a voice for our deepest feelings and thoughts. It’s a form of self-expression that can lead to greater self-understanding and authenticity.

To all of you who might be feeling a bit heavy, let’s give ourselves permission to play.

For entrepreneurs, being booked and busy many time

For entrepreneurs, being booked and busy many times equals success. But on the other side of that is overwhelm.

I have been super busy lately. And while I’m grateful for all of the opportunities coming my way, I want to take a moment to acknowledge that at times, it can be overwhelming.

As a freelance journalist, managing work, travel, and family time can sometimes feel like juggling on a tightrope. Here are the steps I take to remain productive (so I don’t miss my deadlines) even when I feel overwhelmed by the depth and breadth of my work:

1️⃣ Prioritize Ruthlessly: With endless tasks, prioritizing becomes crucial. Every morning, I list my tasks and mark the ones that absolutely must be done that day.

2️⃣ Delegate When Possible: It takes a village, not just to raise a child but also to manage a busy life! I delegate tasks to family members or outsource certain aspects of my business.

3️⃣ Schedule Downtime: Just as important as work time. I schedule time to play (craft/photography) and respect them just like meetings. These pauses help me recharge.

4️⃣ Use Tools to Stay Organized: I rely on apps and tools to keep my schedule and tasks in check. Whether it’s a simple calendar app, or old school data dump using a pen and paper, find what works for you and use it!

5️⃣ Accept Imperfection: Not every post, article or photo will be perfect, and not every day will go as planned. Accepting that some days will be less productive helps reduce stress and keep things in perspective.

Remember, it’s okay to feel overwhelmed, and it’s okay to take a step back to assess and regroup.

I did it again!! Tried something that petrified me. I recently made my debut as a journalist on a true crime TV show on TV One😀! Swipe to see.

For those who know my journey, you know I worked in television for years but my specialty was behind the camera (writing scripts and producing news shows). So, this was a bit different and difficult for me.

But I hope this serves as an inspiration for you to do the things that scare you. Stretch out and don’t be afraid of making mistakes or looking silly. There’s no growth in remaining comfortable.
